So…What is a world cafe?

This World Cafe is unlike any other conference or workshop. The goals are simple: ORBITAL wants to hear directly from patients, carers, clinicians, and people in the industry of ocular drug delivery about the impacts of chronic eye disease (like Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma and Diabetes, to name a few). This is a series of conversations with other members of this community, where we all learn from each other, share experiences, and discuss the impacts and signficance of being involved in research in this area, from pre-clinical work to living with the current treatment options.

Our researchers work in the pre-clinical area, meaning they rarely get to speak directly to patients and hear of their unique and diverse experiences. Doctors, carers, and people in the industry also provide critical knowledge and lived-experiences around the needs of the community, and because of that, all are invited to join us.

Following a warm welcome (and, of course, a cup of coffee or tea to begin our day together), everyone is invited into conversations in small groups. There will be open conversations, set around questions meant to ignite conversation and explore each persons unique experience and understanding of the world. After about twenty minutes, the groups are re-arranged, and new conversations will begin. This process continues for three different rounds. At the end,  we’ll come back to the whole group and collect ideas and insights. This is a learning opportunity and a sharing opportunity for everyone involved – no one is the expert in this situation. Instead, we are all in a state of learning, conversation, and understanding. After the event, you are invited to enjoy lunch with all participants.

Are you interested in participating? You’ll have the chance to talk to one of our team members so that you can ask any questions you might have and also hear more about the event. Simply register your email address or phone number here, and one of our team members will reach out to you with further information.

Do you know other patients who might like to share their stories and perspectives? Please share this invitation with your friends and networks. We all know that personal invitations are the best!

The event is organised by ORBITAL Consortium members: the fantastic team at Instituto Superior Técnico, the Instituto Retina de Lisboa, Fighting Blindness, the ORBITAL Team at Waterford Institute of Technology, and supported by the World Cafe Community Foundation.

Please note that by registering, you are only confirming interest in the event. Final confirmation will take place via communication with one of the event coordinators.
